Big 1st-Half Run Keys Tiger Win

IMG 7841The 3rd-seeded Republic Tigers went on a 17-0 run midway through the first half, and beat Greenwood in the opening round of the Blue & Gold Tournament, 49-27.

The Tigers offense struggled early, but solid defense kept Republic in the game, and they led 9-7 after the first quarter. The Tigers outscored Greenwood 19-4 in the second period, and led 28-11 at halftime.

Republic built its lead to 41-17 by the end of the 3rd quarter, before finishing out with the 22-point victory.

Canyon Smith scored 20 points to lead the Tigers. Jake Fletcher was the only other Tiger in double figures, with 11. Pierce Pittman, Payton Looney and Cody Geiger had six points apiece.

Tim Looney scored his 1000th career point for Greenwood, and led the Blue Jays with 10 points.

Republic advances to play 6th-seeded Fair Grove Tuesday night at 9:30 at JQH Arena.
