Back Nine Dooms Rayl at State Tourney

Through 36 holes, Republic’s Baylee Rayl was hanging near the top of the leaderboard at the Class 2 state golf tournament. She posted a 39 during the first half of the day, but shot a 47 on the back nine to fall out of contention. She finished 16th overall, just one place short of all-state recognition, which is given to the top 15 golfers.

Rayl had started the day in contention for the title, shooting an 80 on the first day, just four strokes off the lead. She ended with a two-day total of 166, 16 strokes behind state champion Sun Young Jung of Springfield Glendale.

Republic’s other golfer, Bailey Cornelison, had two rough days in New Bloomfield after shooting a career best 79 to qualify for the state tournament.
