David Ashby has been working toward his first varsity coaching win since he was a player in high school. Thursday night, he got it in convincing fashion when Republic pounded New Covenant Academy 10-0 in a shortened game.

Seven different players scored, led by Julio Quezada with three goals and two assists. Mitchell Heinzler added one goal and three assists for the Tigers. The other Republic players to score were Marcus Robinson, Gabe Banfield, Armando Hurtado, Tanner Peabody, and Dawson Sjomeling.

“It feels really good, especially after our loss on Tuesday,” Ashby says. “I expected a ‘W,’ but didn’t expect this. New Covenant has always given us a good game.”

Ashby says his team turned in a “top-notch” performance.

“They moved the ball quickly. They maintained their shape well. We had lots of one- and two-touch passes. Our midfield played great,” Ashby says. “I couldn’t have been happier with the way we moved the ball.”

Republic improves to 1-1. The Tigers host Nixa next Tuesday in their Central Ozark Conference opener.
