Republic Overcomes Slow Start to Blast Camdenton

Logan Flood drives to the hoop in the 2nd half.

It took the Republic Lady Tigers more than 3 1/2 minutes to score their first field goal of the season. After that, they scored plenty.

The Lady Tigers used a 12-0 run early in the second quarter to take control against Camdenton, on the way to a 75-56 win in their home opener. Republic’s full-court pressure started the avalanche by causing two quick turnovers and allowing the Lady Tigers to score six points in a minute.
After trailing 7-5 early, the Lady Tigers outscored Camdenton 35-12 to take a 40-19 lead at halftime.

Logan Flood led the Lady Tigers with a career-high 16 points. Brooke Stanfield had 13 points. Alexis Ladwig scored 10. Micah Mansker and Michayla Shanks each scored eight. Tori Taylor had seven points. Jordan Kabetske had five, Jade Sawyer had four, and Taylor Fergen and Allyson Barrett each scored two — their first career varsity points.

Coach Kris Flood says his team’s depth made a difference in the crucial first-half run.

“When we have the ability to play several kids, we can stay fresh and try to run. I thought that was a big key, especially in the second quarter. I thought they might have worn out a little bit,” Flood says.

Before the defense asserted itself, Republic had struggled with its shooting, missing nine shots before Flood drained a jumper from the right wing at the 3:29 mark of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers also committed several early turnovers.

” a little sloppy there at moments. But then we also had some times there where we looked like we could put it together and go. We have our moments there where we’ll go (on) a 10- or 12-0 run,” says Flood. “Then we also have some times there where we’ll turn the ball over two or three times, giving up a couple easy baskets. It’s just frustrating. It’s probably because I expect a little bit more out of this group. They’ve been through it now and they know what to expect. But we’ll get better on that.”

Camdenton got 15 points from Baily Rezabek and 13 from Alyssa Ripley in the loss. The Lakers fall to 0-1.

Republic is 1-0. Their next game is on the road at Kickapoo on December 8th.
