A two-week layoff didn’t bother the Lady Tigers. Republic allowed just eight points in the first half on the way to a lopsided 61-22 win over Joplin in the first round of the Carthage tournament.

Michayla Shanks led the charge in the first half, raining in four three-pointers to lead Republic to a 35-8 halftime lead. Shanks ended the game with five treys and 15 points.

Jordan Kabetske had 15 points as well, to tie for team-high scoring honors. Jade Sawyer had 11. Logan Flood scored five, Brylee Argo scored four; Alexis Ladwig, Micah Mansker, Carly Bayans, and Tori Taylor scored three apiece; and Brooke Stanfield scored two.

The game was the first since January 15, when Republic blew out Marshfield at home. When Carthage pushed the Lady Tigers’ tournament opener to Thursday, it created a large gap in the schedule, giving Republic a chance to rest up for the stretch run of the season.

Republic will have three more games in the next four days, including a Friday-night matchup against Pittsburg, Kansas. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Thursday’s win improves Republic’s record to 13-2. They’re ranked 5th in the state in Class 5.
