The Tiger baseball team exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat Springfield Catholic 8-2 Tuesday.

For five innings, Republic had barely mustered any offense at all. The Tigers had only two hits and trailed 2-0 when the sixth inning started, but Jake Smith walked and two outs later, Gage Morris blasted a two-run homer to tie it.  That opened the floodgates for a seven-run, two-out rally that included singles by Tyler Mackey and Austin Atkins, and a triple by Parker Nelson, who eventually came in to score on a wild pitch.

Chandler Coates pitched three shutout innings in relief and picked up the win for Republic. Coates struck out three and walked four, but didn’t allow a hit. Jansen McQuerter  added two shutout innings to close the door on the Irish. He walked one and struck out two.

Alex Reynolds started for Republic, pitching two innings and allowing two unearned runs.

Austin Larson took the loss for Catholic.

Republic improves to 5-1. The Tigers return to the field at home Saturday for two games. They’ll play Aurora and Camdenton, with games at 10 am and 2:30 pm.
