Georges Highlights District Finale for Republic

The Lady Tigers tennis team wrapped its season at the individual district tournament, with no one advancing to sectionals. The closest was Heather Georges, who took 3rd place overall in the singles bracket. Only the top two individuals and top two doubles teams advance.

In doubles, Brittany Thompson and Kaitly Snyder lost in three sets to a Nixa team, 6-4 1-6 7-5. Macie Thornhill and Molly Womack defeated West Plains 6-4 6-2 before losing to the eventual doubles champion from Nixa, 6-0 6-1.

In singles, Georges won her first match in three sets before losing to singles champ Hannah Nelson. She won her 3rd place match over another Nixa competitor, 6-4 6-1.

Coach Eric Hanson says despite having only one returning varsity player from last year, 2015 was a good season.

“Overall we were 8-5 with a second-place finish in COC,” he says. “Not bad for a team that lost five of their top six players to graduation or injury. I’m really proud of the way they worked and compete on a daily basis. Republic girls tennis has a lot to look forward to the next couple of years.

Thompson and Tayler Avery both graduate, but a strong core of players are due to return for the Lady Tigers next season.
