First-Set Squeaker Propels Carthage Past Republic

Even a straight-set sweep can sometimes come down to just a couple of points on the volleyball court. Thursday night, Carthage pulled out the key points in the first set and used the momentum to grab a Central Ozark Conference victory over Republic.

Carthage edged Republic 26-24 in the first set, then won more easily at home in the second set, 25-17, to close out the match. Carthage improved to 24-7 overall, even though they’re only 3-4 in the COC.

Republic fell to 15-9 overall. The Lady Tigers are also 3-4 in the conference.

Lexi Long, Lauren O’Hara, and Taegan Thomas each had five kills to lead the Lady Tigers. Bella Drennan had 20 assists and Eryn Russell contributed 17 digs to the defense.

Carthage won both the JV and freshman matches in three sets.
