Lady Tigers Heat Up to Grab 1st Win

Taylor Fergen scored more than 20 points for a second straight night, and this time she had scoring help from several teammates, as the Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the year, 55-41 over Belton. Fergen finished with a career-high 26 points. Brylee Manes added 11, Allyson Barrett had 10, and Madi Beckham scored eight.

Republic trailed 23-20 at halftime, but scored nine straight points to start the 3rd quarter and never trailed again. The Lady Tigers outscored Belton 18-5 in the period and eventually stretched the lead to as many as 14 points.

After making just one of 25 three-pointers in their season opener, Republic shot 42% (5-for-12) from beyond the three-point arc. They shot 54% from the floor overall, while holding Belton to just 35%.

“They got some of those nerves out of the way ,” says coach Kris Flood. “A lot of those kids last night, it was their first major varsity experience. I thought we played more relaxed and played more our style. We had a lot of kids step up.”

Republic improves to 1-1. The Lady Tigers return to the court Saturday in St. James against Jefferson City.
