Free Throw Struggles Cost Lady Tigers

Taylor Fergen scored 25 points, but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome turnovers and poor free throw shooting in a 57-52 loss in the championship game of the Gary Keeling Classic in Bolivar.

A big 2nd quarter made the difference for Branson after Republic had jumped used stingy defense and hot shooting to jump on top 17-7. Branson outscored the Lady Tigers 23-7 over the last 4 1/2 minutes of the 1st half to take a 30-24 lead into the break.

Republic kept the game close and even cut the lead to two points at 45-43 after Allyson Barrett blocked a Branson shot on a fast break and the Lady Tigers turned it into two points at the other end of the floor. But Republic missed seven free throws in the 4th quarter and couldn’t overcome it.

In addition to Fergen’s 25 points, Republic got 10 from Brylee Manes, six from Allyson Barrett, four each from Megan Branstetter and Madi Beckham, and three from Madi Appleberry. Manes spent the 4th quarter on the bench after injuring her foot in the 3rd quarter.

Amanda Kearney had 23 points for Branson.

Republic falls to 11-7. They have a week off before playing Webster Groves at Ozark next Saturday, January 28.Find out how you can get $25 worth of free photos as a subscriber to Republic Tiger Sports magazine. Sign up now, before this offer runs out!

Player of the Game

Taylor Fergen did everything she could offensively to keep the Lady Tigers in the game, but it wasn’t quite enough. Fergen exploded for 25 points — 17 of them in the 2nd half — to pace Republic in their loss, earning recognition as our Player of the Game.
