Special Olympics: State Indoor Games Results

Republic’s Special Olympics team traveled to Fort Leonard Wood for the State Indoor Games on March 16. Here’s a report from coach Scott Weis.

Let the Games Begin!

On Thursday night March 16th, members of our Special Olympics Bowling and Basketball teams traveled to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to take part in the Special Olympics State indoor games. Indoor games kicked off Friday March 17th with participants from our bowling team competing in 2 game singles and Unified Doubles competition. In the 2-Game singles bowling competition Eric Travis, Kali Dawson both came away with Gold medals, while Eric Whillock took home a Bronze medal. Kaya McClintock earned a fourth place ribbon. Josh Bean and Izzach Thornton competed in the Unified Doubles bowling where they captured a Silver medal. Afterwards, the athletes took part in the festivities at Victory Village inside the Davidson Fitness Center.

Persistence and Perseverance

On Saturday March 18th, our Tiger Paws 3 on 3 team faced tough competition in their first game as they faced the Kennett Indians out of the Southeast Area. The Indians came right out of the gate playing fierce and menacing defense the entire game. The Tiger Paws worked hard and battled but suffered the loss 10-2. Christian Clayton scored the Paws lone basket. The Tiger Paws came back in the second game to force Double Overtime as they faced the Grain Valley Spirit out of Kansas City.

The Tiger Claws 5 on 5 team took on Warren County out of St. Louis in their first game. Warren County featured a fast pace offense and transition game. The Tiger Claws took the loss 31-22, due to costly turnovers and the inability to utilize teamwork on both the offensive and defensive ends. Kaden Coatney paced the scoring for the Tiger Claws with six points, Eric Travis and Tyler Wells scored four points each. While Riley Hesterly, Kayla Kies, Paul Cook and Josh Bean each contributed two points, Bean also had two blocked shots on the defensive end.

In game 2, the Tiger Claws played Falcon Red out of St. Louis. The Claws stepped up on the defensive end as they were all over the court, stealing the ball, getting hands in the face of their opponent, and creating turnovers. Offensively, the Claws displayed great teamwork as they worked hard to spread the floor, look for an open teammate to pass to and score the ball. Score the ball they did as they came roaring back from a 6-2 and 8-6 first half deficit to take the lead 14-10 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Claws held on to the lead in the 4th quarter and finished with a 24-20 victory to finish the year. Christian Ard, Eric Travis, Josh Bean, Kaden Coatney, and Kayla Kies each scored four points. Riley Hesterly and Izzach Thornton each had two points in the victory.

Dougie Kies took part in the individual skills competition, where he put his skills in dribbling, passing and shooting on display. Dougie worked hard to earn a Bronze medal in the skills competition.

To finish the night Saturday, the athletes had the chance to trade in their bowling and basketball shoes and put on their boogie shoes as they took part in the dance.

Thrice is Nice

On Sunday March 19th, Bowling competition resumed as our athletes took part in 3-game singles bowling. The SOMO Tigers Bowlers pulled off a trifecta of Gold as Christian Ard, Samuel Ard and Kaden Hill all captured Gold medals. Kaden Hill finished the day posting his best score of the year as he bowled a 119 in his final game.

The Bowling and Basketball seasons are finished for 2017. Track and Field practice starts on Tuesday March 21st from 5-6 pm at the track at the HS. For more information or if interested in participating you can contact Track and Field coach Kevin Gehrig.
