District Double: Birlew & Creek Take Another Title

Case Birlew and Hunter Creek followed up Republic’s team tennis district championship with another title of their own Saturday morning. Birlew and Creek won the individual district doubles championship by defeating Briggs Boyd and Caleb Case of Nixa 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in in the finals.

This is the second district doubles championship in a row for Republic — but they did it with different players this season. Last year, Michael Nacy and Brad Hendrix were the champs.

The individual district tournament began Thursday, but play was suspended because of severe weather. Before the postponement, Birlew and Creek had notched two other wins, both in straight sets, over teams from Carthage (6-0, 6-1) and from Neosho (6-2, 6-2).

Birlew and Creek will meet a team from Ozark in the individual sectionals Tuesday at 4 p.m.

In other Republic results, Dylan Mackey finished third in the district singles bracket. He defeated Brayden Hardee of Webb City before losing to eventual champion Gustavo Garcia of Neosho. Mackey rebounded to defeat Tanner Powley of Nixa 8-6 for third place. Mackey had previously lost to Powley twice this season.

Brett Carpenter finished fifth in singles. Austin Massey and Logan Elder finished fifth in doubles.

Republic won the team district championship earlier in the week. Team sectionals will be held on Saturday, May 20, at Gillenwaters Tennis Courts.
