Late Rally Pushes Pirates Past Tigers

A three-run rally in the fifth inning pushed Branson past Republic 7-4 in a COC matchup at Branson.

Zach Johnston’s sacrifice fly scored Hunter Werling to break a 4-4 tie and provide the eventual game-winner. The Pirates added two more runs later on a single by Cameron Banks and a bases-loaded walk by Ty Werling.

Republic managed just seven base hits. Three of them were by Tyler Cavener, who also scored a run and drove home another.

Three of Republic’s runs came in the third inning, when Tyler Cavener singled to lead off, then Blake Messier tried to sacrifice and reached on an error. Austin Atkins scored them both with a 2-RBI double. After he advanced to third, he scored on an RBI groundout by Landin Sigman, giving Republic a 3-2 lead.

The lead didn’t last long, because Branson answered with two runs in the bottom of the third on a double by Tyson Holmes.

The Tigers tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Cavener, but that was the last run they’d score. Branson pitchers retired 10 of the last 11 Tiger batters.

Republic returns home for a game against Rogersville Tuesday, when they’ll celebrate Senior Night.

American Family Baseball Tiger of the Game

Tyler Cavener was one of the lone bright spots at the plate for the Tigers Monday. Cavener had three hits — all singles. He scored one run and drove home another, then pitched a scoreless inning in relief to cap his performance. He’s our American Family Baseball Tiger of the Game.
