Republic bounced back from a lackluster performance Friday with a 57-52 win over Harrison, Ark., Saturday afternoon. The Lady Tigers got 17 points from senior Brylee Manes to break a two-game losing streak.
Jefferson City had blown out Republic Friday night, but coach Kris Flood says the effort from his players was much better Saturday.
“I thought we played a lot harder today, and…cleaned up some things,” Flood says. “We can relax now a little bit. We got a ‘W,’ and the effort was better. I was happier than last night.”
In the third quarter, foul trouble and injuries threatened to sink Republic. Megan Branstetter went out after colliding with another player and didn’t return. Manes and Anna Bell were both on the bench with foul trouble, but other contributors stepped up. Jade Kirby made two huge shots that helped rebuff Harrison.
“Kirby hit a couple of big threes, especially when we looked like we were really struggling there,” Flood says. “The bench did a good job. I thought they came in and really helped us hang in that game.”
Republic led 37-36 as the fourth quarter began. The Lady Tigers outscored Harrison 20-16 in the final eight minutes. They were 10 of 15 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and Kirby and Bartelsmeyer each hit a three-pointer to help hold off the Goblins.
Republic improves to 2-4. The Lady Tigers host Strafford Tuesday.
