Republic baseball senior Dalton Cooper will continue his playing career at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. Cooper has signed a letter of intent to play baseball with the Vikings next season.

“I like the atmosphere, and all the people there were great,” says Cooper. “The coaches told me more than likely I’d see some playing time next year, so that really interested me.”

The Vikings are led by head coach Bill Browett and assistant Deon Duncan. They compete in the Heart of America Conference.

Greenwood Drops Republic in OT

The Republic Lady Tigers came from behind to force overtime, but ended up losing their regular season finale at Greenwood, 3-2.

Neither team scored early, but Greenwood broke on top with about 30 seconds left in the first half. The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the second half before Republic scrapped its way back.

The Lady Tigers got on the scoreboard first on a goal from Sierra Casagrand with about 14 minutes left in regulation. Seven minutes later, Sara Marcotte scored on a penalty kick, and the teams were tied when the second half ended.

Greenwood won the game in sudden death with about two minutes remaining in the first overtime period.

In the JV game, Republic led 1-0 until a late goal by Greenwood in the final 20 seconds of regulation forced a tie.

Lady Tigers Shut Out Branson

Sierra Casagrand scored a goal in the opening minute, and that was all the Lady Tigers needed for a win at Branson. But she tacked on two more goals, and Sara Marcotte and Jocelyn Carpenter each added one on the way to a 5-0 victory.

Casagrand’s opening goal might have signaled a fast start, but that was the only goal Republic would score in the first half. The Lady Tigers clung to a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Casagrand scored again on an assist from Brittany Griffith at the 39 minute mark. About ten minutes later, Carpenter and Marcotte scored in quick succession, 43 seconds apart, to make the score 4-0. Casagrand completed her hat trick at the 15-minute mark to round out the scoring.

The Lady Tigers are on the road again tonight, traveling to Greenwood as they prep for district play beginning next week.

Woods Shuts Out Wildcats

Senior Garrett Woods threw a complete game three-hit shutout as Republic beat Rogersville 3-1 on the road Wednesday. Woods struck out three and walked one. He also helped his own cause with a hit and a run scored.

The Tigers drew seven walks, including three by Austin Beckner, to put together their offensive output despite having only two hits. Nathan Strobel drove in two runs with a double for Republic.

Lady Tigers Raise $7,700 for Autism Speaks

Autism gameThe Republic Lady Tigers came up short against Bolivar in a 2-1 loss on penalty kicks Friday, but that doesn’t mean their night wasn’t a success. Republic raised about $7,700 for autism awareness, thanks to a series of fundraisers that culminated in the second annual Autism Speaks game.

Team members gathered support from the community, raising money over the past several months. They signed up business sponsors and held other fundraisers, including a bake sale and a silent auction. They also sold T-shirts for the event. Bolivar’s team purchased their own shirts to contribute to the fundraiser.

Coach Mike Hines has said since coming to Republic that one goal for his young program is to make a contribution to the community.

“I think right now the girls have a hard time understanding that process. But I think they’ll look back and reflect, and they’ll see this is something they’ll always remember,” he says. “The fact that we’ve raised so much money by a bunch of high school kids, to me, it’s very, very significant.”

On the field, Republic played Bolivar to a 1-1 tie through two overtime periods. When neither team scored, the game came down to penalty kicks, and Bolivar outscored Republic 4-3.

Stevens Scores Game-winner on Senior Night

SeniorsOn a team where the attention often centers on underclassmen, it was a Republic senior who delivered the golden goal in a Senior Night victory over Willard. Sadie Stevens booted home the game-winner with her left foot, finding the left side of the net in overtime to give Republic a 2-1 win.

“We got a breakaway and Mikayla (Jester) slid me in the ball,” says Stevens. “I took a touch on it and connected it, and somehow it went in. I don’t even really know how it happened, but it was awesome.”

Coach Mike Hines says he’s happy to see the seniors have success, especially because they are so new to the game.

“None of them have ever, until last year, played the game before,” says Hines. “It’s such a wonderful think to see them fall in love with something like they have. For them to come together and have an evening like this, it’s really special.”

Stevens says the team’s camaraderie off the field has contributed to its success.

“I think it’s because we all get along so well. We have an awesome coach and we’re kind of like a huge family,” she says. “I think that’s one reason we play so well together and we’re winning games this year.”

Another senior–goalkeeper Amanda Snider–played a big role in the victory. Snider was under pressure most of the night, but allowed only one early goal.

Soccer 1Willard broke on top eight minutes into the game, and outplayed Republic much of the night. But Samantha Minor scored on a corner kick with an assist by Sara Marcotte to tie the game just before halftime. The score stayed 1-1 until Stevens’ goal about five minutes into the 10-minute overtime period.

The win boosts Republic’s record to 13-7.

Republic used 2-run outbursts in the 2nd and 3rd innings to get past Aurora on the road Wednesday, 5-3.

The Tigers broke on top 2-0 after an inning and a half, and they led 4-0 going into the bottom of the third behind starting pitcher Nathan Strobel.

Aurora scored one in the 3rd to cut the lead to three, and scored two more in the 5th to make the score 4-3. But Republic picked up an insurance run in the sixth, and made it stand up.
