Woods Signs College Letter

Republic baseball senior Garrett Woods has signed a letter of intent to play college baseball at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas. Woods will join the Blue Dragons next fall, after he wraps up his senior season at Republic.

Republic coach Howard Quigley says Woods’ work ethic is what helps him stand out.

“He’s what you like to see your athletes do their senior year. He’s worked hard, he’s taken a lot of self-initiative, and he’s self-motivated,” says Quigley. “That’s the reason he’s signing that paper today.

Woods says continuing his baseball career beyond high school was an important part of his college decision.

“I feel like it’s a great place to go. It’s got a long history of being a good program, and a good coach,” he says. “I like it out there, and I think it will be a good fit.”

MSU/Republic Baseball Hitting Camp Set

The Republic High School baseball program will team up with Missouri State University’s coaching staff to conduct a hitting camp on January 10-11. The camp is open to players from 7th to 12th grade. It will be held at the Hammons Field indoor training facility in Springfield.

Missouri State head coach Keith Guttin, assistant Brent Thomas and other MSU staff members will lead the camp.

Baseball Camp Planned in December

Republic baseball players have the opportunity to participate in a pitching and catching camp at Missouri State University December 17th and 18th. The camp will be held at the Hammons Field indoor facility. It’s open to players from 7th through 12th grade.

MissouriState pitching coach Paul Evans and his staff will conduct the camp, with sessions running from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Baseball Tigers End Season

The Republic Tigers baseball team ended its season with a 10-0 loss in the district tournament to state-ranked Webb City. The Tigers opened the game with two defensive errors, and it went downhill from there.

It was the third win over Republic this season for the Cardinals. Webb City had blown out Republic 23-2 early in the year, but the young Tigers nearly pulled off an upset at home in their second meeting. The Tigers jumped on top early in that one, and led most of the way, before giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th, and losing 8-7.

The Tigers will still be relatively young next year, but they’ll have much more experience at the varsity level. Four freshmen saw extensive starting action during the last half of this season.

Ozark Comes from Behind Twice in 10-inning Win

Ozark scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to come from behind and beat Republic Tuesday, 8-7. It was a game of comebacks for Ozark, who trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th before Andy Westfall homered to force extra innings.

Garrett Woods homered twice in a losing cause for Republic. Freshman Cole Hurst added three hits, including a double.

The game was delayed by lightning at the start. Republic took a 3-1 lead on the strength of Woods’s two homers, and led the rest of the way until Westfall’s homer tied it in the 7th.

Neither team scored again until the 10th, when Nathan Strobel’s pinch-hit two-run double gave Republic another lead, 7-5. The game ended when Republic outfielders Ryan Sifferman and Patrick Dickens collided in the outfield going after a fly ball off the bat of Cody Holzer, allowing the winning run to cross the plate for Ozark.

Republic falls to 2-13 overall, 0-3 in the COC. Ozark is 10-5, 3-0 in the conference.

Bolivar Scores Late to Beat Tigers

Bolivar scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning to break a 5-5 tie and beat Republic 7-5. A single by Josh Chamberlain drove home Rafe Peavey to give Bolivar the lead for good.

Republic had scored a single run in the first inning, after Ryan Sifferman reached on an error and Garrett Woods and Nathan Strobel delivered back-to-back singles. After Bolivar scored two in the top of the 2nd, Republic answered with two more. Garrett Woods doubled home Cole Hurst and Sifferman to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Bolivar tied it in the 3rd before Republic scored two more. The key hit in that inning was a double into the left-field gap by Creed Smiley. Smiley later scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the fourth, a walk and a hit batter turned into two more runs for Bolivar, and the score was 5-5. It stayed that way until Bolivar scored the two game-winning runs in the 7th.

Nathan Strobel started for the Tigers, but left the game with an injury. Daniel Zaragoza took the loss. He pitched in relief until he allowed a leadoff double in the 7th inning. Garrett Woods relieved Zaragoza.

Jason Myers pitched a complete game to get the win for Bolivar. He allowed eight hits overall, but only two hits in the final four innings. Myers struck out eight.

4-run 7th Inning Topples Tigers

A young Republic lineup had state-ranked Webb City on the ropes for six innings. But the Cardinals erupted for four runs in the top of the 7th to beat the Tigers 8-7.

Republic got a strong start from sophomore pitcher Nathan Strobel. He pitched six innings, allowing four runs, before being relieved after he walked the leadoff man in the 7th inning.

The Tigers had broken on top with five runs in the bottom of the 1st. Nathan Strobel and Austin Beckner each drove in a run, and freshman Cole Hurst doubled with the bases loaded to make the score 5-0. Beckner and Hurst each added another RBI in the bottom of the 3rd.

Woods Strikes Out 13 in Win Over Marshfield

Junior Garrett Woods pitched a 2-hit shutout and helped his own cause with a key 5th-inning double to lead Republic past Marshfield 6-0 Thursday. Woods struck out 13 Blue Jays to pick up the complete-game win.

The Tigers and Blue Jays were scoreless until Republic broke on top with a single run in the 4th inning, on an RBI single by Nathan Strobel. The Tigers scored five in the 5th, keyed by a two-run double by Woods.

Republic improves to 2-4, after losing its first four games to start the season. They’re back in action tomorrow night at Springfield Catholic.

Tigers Outslug Hornets 11-9

The Republic Tigers outslugged Hillcrest to pick up their first win of the year Wednesday, 11-9 at Hillcrest. The Tigers scored six runs in the top of the 2nd inning and held on down the stretch. Hillcrest loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but Garrett Woods struck out the final batter to pick up the save.

Nathan Strobel started the game on the mound for Republic, and pitched 2 2/3 innings. He left with the Tigers leading 7-6. Republic stretched the lead to 11-6 with Patrick Dickens on the hill. The Hornets scored a single run off Dickens in the 6th, and two in the 7th, before Woods got the final out.

Dalton Cooper had two hits, and Woods and Dalton Phelps each doubled for the Tigers.
