Fletcher Signs with Missouri Valley

Jake 001Republic’s Jake Fletcher has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Missouri Valley College in Marshall. Fletcher helped lead the Tigers to a state championship his senior season. His buzzer beater at the end of the 1st quarter in the state championship game against Normandy was one of the key plays of the game.

Fletcher says Republic’s success in the playoffs helped get him more attention from colleges as he was considering his future.

“I think the state run was a big part in my collegiate decision,” says Fletcher. “It was able to give (Missouri Valley) Coach (Chad) Lance an opportunity to look at me, and I think that played a big role.”

From a leader on a state championship team to a college freshman, Fletcher says he knows things will be different next year.

“It’s going to be a big transition,” says Fletcher. “But the state thing is something they can’t take away. It’s always going to be here, back at Republic, so I think that’s awesome.”

Fletcher will join Republic’s Brody Thompson at Missouri Valley. He says their similar styles of play make him confident he can contribute in Marshall.

“Brody and I play pretty much alike, so that’s why I thought I could go into the system and fit in.”

Postseason Honors Continue for Republic Hoops

The boys and girls basketball teams at Republic continue to rake in postseason honors.

The Tigers placed two players on the media’s Class 4 all-state teams. Junior forward Cody Geiger was named to the first team, and senior guard Jake Fletcher earned a spot on the second team. Coach Trevyor Fisher was named Missouri Class 4 coach of the year in his first season.

The Lady Tigers’ senior scoring leader, Alice Heinzler, was named to the Class 4 first team. She was the only player to receive all-state recognition from the media.

The Lady Tigers were ranked 5th in the final state poll, just behind West Plains, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs. Webb City, the state runner-up, was ranked second, giving southwest Missouri three of the top five spots in the final statewide poll. Dexter, a final four attendee that lost to Republic late in the regular season, was ranked sixth.

Three Republic Players, Fisher Earn State Honors

The Tigers and Lady Tigers have landed a total of three players on the All-State team selected by Missouri Basketball Coaches Association. Boys head coach Trevyor Fisher was honored as well.

Junior forward Cody Geiger and senior center Marcus Miller were both named to the Class Four All-State team. Geiger led the state champion Tigers in scoring all season and his double-double in the championship game — 20 points and 10 rebounds — was a big part of the victory over Normandy.

Miller was the anchor inside for a big Republic lineup. He averaged 8.4 points and nearly five rebounds per game, and shot 67% from the floor for the season.

Coach Trevyor Fisher was named Class 4 State Coach of the Year. The season was not only his first at the helm in Republic, but his first as a head coach anywhere.

For the Lady Tigers, senior guard Alice Heinzler earned a spot on the All-State Class 4 team. Heinzler led the Lady Tigers in scoring, and helped Republic put together one of its best seasons ever, finishing with a 25-2 record after a loss in the district finals to West Plains.

Fletcher, Geiger Lead Tigers to State Title

CelebrateWhen Republic’s seniors finished 4th in the state as freshmen in 2010, they promised themselves they’d be back at the final four this year. Jake Fletcher made sure it wasn’t just a token appearance.

In his final game in a Tigers uniform, Fletcher hit four of six three-point attempts, including a running 28-footer as time expired in the 1st quarter, helping Republic beat Normandy 54-51 in the Class 4 state championship game. Fletcher also helped anchor the Republic backcourt against Normandy’s relentless defense.

After turning the ball over 12 times in the 1st half, Republic committed only two turnovers after the break. The Tigers withstood a Normandy run and hit free throws down the stretch to seal the school’s first state title since 1963.

Junior Cody Geiger came up big for the Tigers as well. He was 7-of-11 from the floor, for a game-high 20 points. Geiger also pulled down ten rebounds, and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

“That’s the way we’ve been all year,” says coach Trevyor Fisher. “We don’t have that one guy that’s scoring 20 points a game. We don’t rely on one part of our game to carry us through. From game to game, you never know if it’s going to be our inside guys, our guards. We just had all the right pieces and more importantly, some good team chemistry to go along with that.”

FletcherThe first 12 minutes of the game belonged to Republic. Republic led 15-10 after one period, and the lead was double digits midway through the 2nd quarter, as the Tiger defense frustrated Normandy’s run-and-gun attack.

But Normandy forced several Republic turnovers and sped up the pace of the game as they fought back to take a one-point lead into halftime, 26-25.

Coming out of the halftime break, it looked like Normandy might run away with it. Republic went cold from the field, and stopped crashing the boards, as the Vikings built a seven-point lead at 38-31. The Normandy lead was 42-36 heading into the 4th quarter.

“Coach Fisher always does a great job of keeping us calm,” Fletcher says of the team’s mood after Normandy took the lead. “We knew they would make a run obviously with their press… so we wanted to stay calm under pressure and we got a couple of turnovers there toward the end of the 2nd quarter. When they made their run, we just had to stay calm. We had to come back, meet our passes…and play as well as we could.

After withstanding that run, for the third playoff game in a row, the Tigers came up big down the stretch. Republic scored the first ten points of the 4th quarter to grab a 46-42 lead with 3:59 left.

GeigerNormandy retook the lead at 49-48, but two free throws by Dylan Bekemeier with 1:30 left gave the Tigers the lead for good. Fletcher hit one of two free throws on the next possession to extend the lead to 51-49 with 1:01 remaining. After another defensive stop, Cody Geiger hit two more free throws to make the lead 53-49.

Terry White scored on a layup to cut the lead to two, and Dylan Bekemeier made one of two free throws to give Normandy a final chance. But Republic made sure to defend the 3-point attempt on the final possession, and a long shot by Gerard Fuller was short. When the shot bounced out of bounds as time expired, the Tigers rushed to half court to celebrate their victory.

In addition to Geiger and Fletcher, the Tigers got seven points apiece from Bekemeier and Grant Hancock, and five points from Canyon Smith. The Tigers out rebounded Normandy 27-19.

The Vikings were led by Fuller, who had 14 points. Kevin McLemore added 12, and Terry White scored 12.

Republic’s state championship comes exactly 50 years after the Tigers won their only previous title in 1963. And it serves as a one-year follow-up to the 2012 championship won by the Lady Tigers.

“It was just a little taste, when the girls brought it back,” says Fletcher. “It was something to look forward to, and that’s maybe how we wanted to go out. We fulfilled everything that we wanted to.”

50 Years Later, Tigers Look to Repeat History

Screen Shot 2013 03 15 at 8 45 36 PMA half-century ago, the Republic Tigers went to Brewer Field House in Columbia and came home with a Class M state basketball championship. Saturday, the Tigers will be back on the big stage in Columbia — this time at Mizzou Arena — when they play Normandy for a Class 4 state championship.

Throughout this season, the current Tigers have had plenty of opportunity to hear about the exploits of the 1963 team. The state champs were honored at multiple reunions, including the Blue & Gold championship game in December.

After winning the state semifinal game against Liberty North Thursday, some of this year’s Tigers talked about what the 50-year anniversary means to their current season.

“We met all those players…a couple of times throughout the season,” says senior Grant Hancock, who’s the only Tiger in history to play in two final fours. “They keep telling us to soak everything in and just be in the moment, and we’re trying to do that. To do that 50 years after they won, that would be crazy.

“They were all smiles. They love watching the game, watching us play.”

Fellow senior Marcus Miller says he’d love to follow in the ’63 team’s footsteps.

“It’s every senior’s dream to win state their senior year, and hopefully we can repeat. That would be great,” Miller says.

Republic coach Trevyor Fisher says aside from winning a state championship, he’s impressed by something else that 1963 team accomplished.

“When they’ve talked to our team, they’ve talked about the relationships that they’ve built, not only in high school, but how they’ve kind of stayed in touch 50 years later. We have such a great group of kids that are great friends, and I know that 50 years from now they’re going to be doing the same thing, so it’s pretty cool.”

Republic will attempt to win its second state title, when the Tigers meet Normandy at 3 p.m. Saturday. I’ll have live play-by-play of the game, and photos, video highlights, and a game recap afterward.
