Her all-state plaque will be hung alongside other former all-state athletes from Republic.

Ramsey played four seasons for the Lady Tigers, and started on the varsity team her senior year, earning second-team all-state honors. She led the team in steals and assists both her junior and senior seasons. Her senior year, she was named the team’s defensive most valuable player.

“Kyra took a tremendous amount of pride in playing defense,” says Republic coach Kris Flood. “She played with heart, and had a true desire to do whatever it took to help her team come out on top.”

Ramsey helped Republic win three district championships, and make an appearance in the state quarterfinals her senior year. That season, the Lady Tigers were 22-7, and finished as runners-up in the COC, with a 6-1 conference record. Ramsey earned all-conference and all-district honors that season, too.

Ramsey also played volleyball for two years, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated with a 4.0 grade point average.

Ramsey is currently a starting guard for the Baker University Wildcats in Baldwin, Kansas.

(See video.) The final defensive stop thwarted a comeback by Carthage, who had trailed 65-58 with just over three minutes left.

Nick Yocum led the way for Republic with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. He had 15 in the first half. Canyon Smith added 10. Marcus Miller and Jake Fletcher scored 8 apiece. Grant Hancock had 7. Payton Looney and Dylan Bekemeier had 6 apiece, and Cody Geiger scored 4 for the Tigers.

Desmond Buerge scored 27 points for Carthage to lead all scorers.

Republic gave up the first seven points of the game, but ripped off eight in a row to take the lead. They trailed again at 9-8, but never lost the lead the rest of the way. It was 18-13 after one quarter, and 38-32 at halftime. The Tigers built an 11-point lead midway through the 3rd quarter before Carthage closed the gap down the stretch. The margin was down to 55-50 by the end of the third quarter.

Carthage gradually closed the gap to one point with about 12 seconds left, and had a final crack at the win. Payton Looney committed a foul, forcing Carthage to take the ball out of bounds with 4 seconds left, setting up the final defensive stop.

Both teams are now 18-4.

The JV team beat Carthage 67-46.

Before the varsity game, Taylor Wells was crowned 2012 Courtwarming Queen.

Nick Yocum had 20 points for the Tigers, and Canyon Smith had 8. Grant Hancock had 11 rebounds.

The game was close for most of the first half. The Tigers fell behind early, but clawed back to tie the game 12-12 after one period.

With the game tied at 24, the Tigers went on an 11-2 run to take a 35-26 lead into the halftime break.

The game stayed close through the 3rd quarter, with Republic holding the lead most of the way. The Tigers took their first double-digit lead at 47-36, with 5:15 left in the game. Three minutes later, a pair of free throws and a breakaway layup by Canyon Smith stretched the lead to 15, and the Tigers salted the game away.

Republic improves to 4-1 on the season. They play again next Friday at Monett.

Earlier in the night, the JV team beat Cassville 47-12.

Republic basketball fans got their first glimpse of the Tigers and Lady Tigers during the Black and Orange games. The boys and girls varsity, JV and freshman squads matched up in a series of scrimmages.

Girls head coach Kris Flood says he was happy to get through the scrimmage without injuries, and he liked what he saw from his team.

“Until we get (center Alexis) Edwards back, we’re gonna have to really get after people and try to push the tempo,” Flood says. “We’re going to have to take advantage of our quickness and our defensive intensity.”

Boys head coach Gary Stanfield says he liked the energy of his team, too — and saw improvement from last year to this year.

“A lot of energy on the floor,” he says. “It looked like the kids learned something over the summer. Fundamentally, we executed.”

The first set was close most of the way, with neither team leading by more than three points early. Republic appeared to take control when they took a 21-17 lead late in the set, but Ozark won seven of the next eight points to take the lead 24-22. Republic tied it up at 24 before Ozark grabbed the win.

In Set 2, Republic fell behind 5-1, and looked like they were in danger of being swept. But as they’ve done all year, the Lady Tigers came back from an early deficit. Republic outscored Ozark 22-10 to grab an eight-point lead, and evened the match with a 25-18 win.

Republic grabbed the early momentum in the deciding set, jumping on top 3-1, and eventually led 8-6, before Ozark took control. They scored three straight points to take the lead, and never trailed again. Ozark took advantage of its size to pull away, winning the final game 25-18.

Republic had moved into the quarterfinals by beating host Jefferson City in the sectional round earlier Saturday, 25-18 25-19.

The Lady Tigers end their season with a record of 30-6-3.

After bad weather forced the cancellation of the tournament’s first day, golfers had only one round to make their mark Tuesday. Quigley shot a 91 in difficult weather conditions to finish in the top half of the field.

Lindsey Eisenreich of Rockwood Summit blew away the rest of the field, shooting a 1-over-par 72. That was eight strokes ahead of the second-place finisher, Sun Young Jung of Springfield Glendale.

This was Quigley’s third trip to the state tournament. She had previously finished 78th as a freshman and 37th as a sophomore, so this year’s performance improves on her previous finishes.

Republic jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Appleberry singled and scored.

They added three more in the 4th inning. Brooke Dutton started the inning with a walk. She stole second and scored on a single by Amanda Snider. After Taylor Gold singled, Danielle Shelton hit a 2-run double.
