Lady Tigers Win Big, Then Honor Two Big Winners

The Republic Lady Tigers invited back some old friends to celebrate the careers of two coaches Tuesday — and put an exclamation point on the party with a big win over Branson. Payton Appleberry hit two home runs, including a grand slam to lead Republic to a 10-1 win.

But the night belonged to head coach Mike Thorne and assistant Jim Huson, who are both retiring from coaching at the end of this season. More than a dozen former players attended the game, and Thorne and Huson were honored afterwards for their successful careers at Republic High School. Thorne was inducted into the Missouri Fastpitch Coaches Hall of Fame earlier this year.

“It made me feel proud that they came back. Some of them haven’t been here for 15 years,” Thorne said. “I was just very proud to be their coach.

“It was very emotional. These last few weeks are going to be that way, and I’m just trying to keep myself focused on the team,” Thorne said.

One of the former players who returned was outfielder and second baseman Carlie Campbell, who played on both of Thorne’s Final Four teams.

“He’s just a great one,” said Campbell. “He’s encouraging, and just makes you laugh. He always expects you giving it your all.”

Huson says he was touched to see so many former players back in the stands.

“It means everything in the world to have those kids back, because so many of those kids touch our lives,” he said. “(We have) a lot of time invested in those kids. All you can hope to do is try to help them achieve, and be the best they can possibly be, and that inspires us as coaches.”

Huson credited Thorne and another head coach — former football coach Ed Miller — for giving him an opportunity to be a part of building “two great traditions” in the football and softball programs during his career at Republic.

The softball team is back in action at home Thursday against Carthage in another COC game.

Here’s video of Appleberry’s grand slam. It was her second home run of the night. She finished with 7 RBIs.

Late Rally Topples Republic

Neosho scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning to beat Republic 5-4 Thursday.

The Wildcats were down to their final out when a two-run double scored the winning runs to give them the COC victory. It was the second straight conference loss for Republic, who fell to Webb City 14-2 on Tuesday.

Republic Softball Loses Big to Webb City

The Lady Tigers softball team gave up six runs in the top of the 1st inning, and things went downhill from there in a 14-2 loss to Webb City.

The Cardinals banged out 11 hits, including a grand slam and a 3-run homer, and took advantage of five errors by Republic. They led 6-1 after one inning, 8-2 after two, and 13-2 after three.

It’s the first loss in Central Ozark Conference play for the Lady Tigers this season. They play again at Neosho Thursday.

Video Week in Review

Here’s a video recap of some of the biggest moments in Republic Tiger Sports last week.

Seven in a Row

The Republic softball team made it seven wins in a row with a 15-3 thumping of Willard Thursday. The Lady Tigers banged out 17 hits in the victory.

Pitcher Stephanie Eckhoff improved to 8-1, striking out eight and allowing only four hits. None of Willard’s runs were earned.

Payton Appleberry had three hits and scored three runs from the leadoff spot for the Lady Tigers. Rachael Michaelis, Taylor Gold, and Danielle Shelton added three hits apiece.

Republic improves to 9-1 overall. They’re 3-0 in the Central Ozark Conference.

Lady Tigers Come Back to Beat Nixa

Logan Keck singled home the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, as the Republic Lady Tigers came from behind to beat Nixa, 8-7. It was the sixth straight win for Republic.

Republic led 5-4 after six innings, but Nixa appeared to take control with a three-run rally in the top of the 7th, to give them a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Stephanie Eckhoff hit an infield single to lead off, and Rachael Michaelis reached on an error. After Amanda Snider popped out to second, Brooke Dutton reached on an infield single and Eckhoff scored. That set up Keck’s game-winning hit to right-center field.

Eckhoff pitched a complete game, striking out four, for the win. Payton Apleberry was 3-for-3 for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers improve to 8-1. They’re 2-0 in the COC.

Lady Tigers Dominate Nixa Tournament

The Republic Lady Tigers outscored their three opponent by a combined score of 37-3, winning the Nixa Invitational Tournament for the first time Saturday. They closed out the day with an 11-2 rout of their host, Nixa.

Republic opened the day with an 8-0 shutout over Walnut Grove. Stephanie Eckhoff struck out five and walked one to earn the shutout victory. Rachael Michaelis had two doubles and two runs batted in, and Eckhoff also added two hits, including a double.

In the second game, freshman Cheyenne Roberts pitched a three-inning no-hitter as the Lady Tigers blew out Parkview 18-1. Roberts struck out four and walked one. Republic scored 13 runs in the first inning. Allie Inlow hit a grand slam for the Lady Tigers. Brooke Dutton had two hits and three RBIs; Amanda Snider and Alex Wilkshire added two hits and two RBIs apiece.

In the finals against Nixa, Eckhoff pitched again, striking out four and walking none. Payton Appleberry slugged her second homer of the year, and had three hits in the game. Stephanie Eckhoff, Brooke Dutton, and Bre Hemphill each added two hits for the Lady Tigers.

Republic is back at home Tuesday at 5pm, when they play Nixa again in a COC matchup.

Softball Makes it Two Straight

The Lady Tigers softball team picked up a big COC road win Thursday, with a 4-1 victory at Ozark. It was the 2nd straight win for Republic, who trounced Hillcrest 21-0 earlier in the week.

Coach Mike Thorne called junior Stephanie Eckhoff’s performance the best game she’s ever pitched. She allowed just four hits in seven innings against an Ozark team that had been undefeated.

Freshman second baseman Taylor Gold had the biggest hit of the game with Republic trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, when she slugged a bases-loaded triple. Rachael Michaelis followed Gold’s triple with an RBI double of her own to give the Lady Tigers a 4-1 lead, and that was enough for Eckhoff.

The win improves Republic’s record to 4-1, 1-0 in the COC.

Thursday Preview

It’s a big night of sports tonight for the Republic Tigers! The soccer boys play their first-ever home game at 4:30 against New Covenant Academy. I’ll be there, and would love to see a big crowd.

The girls tennis team tries to stay undefeated, traveling to Logan-Rogersville. This match is a home match on the calendar, but a delay in the new tennis courts caused it to be moved. They start at 4:30.

The volleyball team tries to build on its opening-night win over Bentonville, and travels to Carl Junction tonight, with the action starting at 5pm.

And the softball team, coming off a 21-0 win over Hillcrest, has a game against Ozark that will have implications for the COC title race.
