Republic Advances with Strong Second Half

The Republic Tigers came from behind in the 2nd half to win their first-round district game over Bolivar, 42-39. The Tigers trailed throughout the first half, but buckled down on defense after halftime to advance to the second round of the district tournament.

Bolivar led 23-18 at the midway point, but Republic held the Liberators to five points in the 3rd quarter, and led 32-28 going into the final period. The Tigers built their lead to eight points, at 38-30, but Bolivar came back to tie it at 38 apiece. Republic answered the tying basket immediately, on a fast-break layup by Jake Fletcher, to retake the lead for good. After a free throw by Bolivar, two free throws by Jonathan Combs built the lead to three points again, and a desperation shot by Bolivar at the buzzer fell short.

Nick Yocum scored 12 points to lead Republic. Ryan Mathis had 9 and Grant Hancock scored 8 for the Tigers. Jason Myers led all scorers with 14 points for Bolivar.

Republic will play top seed Hillcrest Thursday night at 6 p.m. Hillcrest had a bye in the opening round. The Hornets beat Republic 47-34 in the Republic Invitational Tournament at the beginning of the season.

Soldan Comes Back to Beat Republic, Tigers Take 4th

The Republic Tigers jumped on top early and led most of the way through three quarters, but couldn’t hold off a late charge by St. Louis Soldan, and fell in the state’s Class 4 3rd-place game, 62-55. Republic’s 4th-place state finish is the best for a Republic boys basketball team in three decades.

After shooting less than 30% from the field against Kearney Friday night, the Tigers hit 50% of their shots from the floor against Soldan. They led 20-7 after the 1st quarter, 29-23 at halftime, and 40-39 after three periods. Their halftime total of 29 points was just a basket short of their 31-point output against Kearney for the entire game Friday.

Soldan relied on physical defense to climb back into the game. They forced 25 Republic turnovers, including 10 steals. Those turnovers offset a very good job on the boards by Republic. They out-rebounded a much bigger Soldan team 33-15.

Offensively, Soldan relied on a monster game from leading scorer Brier West. West poured in 34 points, including three 3-pointers. Paul McRoberts added 12.

Kevin Stander led Republic with 18 points. Nick Yocum scored 12, Josh Morrow had 10, and Jonathan Combs had 9. Dylan Fletcher and Brody Thompson scored three apiece.

The Tigers end their season with a record of 20-10.

In the championship game, Kearney handed St. Francis Borgia its first loss in two seasons, knocking off the defending state champs 47-43 to take the title.

The Tigers fell behind by seven points in the 1st quarter, but closed the gap to trail 14-12 after one period. They outscored the Cardinals 13-9 in the 2nd quarter, and led 25-23 at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, the Tigers outscored Webb City 19-11 to grab a 44-34 lead heading into the final period. Republic pulled away down the stretch, outscoring Webb City 20-15 in the 4th quarter, to secure the 15-point victory.

IMG_1665Branson used a big second half to break open a close game and pull away from Republic Tuesday night, 57-45.

But turnovers began to take their toll in the third quarter, along with second-chance points for the Pirates. Branson outscored Republic 17-7 in the 3rd period, sprinting out to a 39-29 lead. The Eagles outscored Republic 18-11 in the 2nd quarter, to take a 29-26 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, Nixa jumped out early before Republic fought back to tie it.
