Republic jumped to an early lead, thanks to a hot start by Kevin Stander. Stander hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points in the first quarter. After one period, Republic led 15-11.

The Eagles outscored Republic 18-11 in the 2nd quarter, to take a 29-26 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, Nixa jumped out early before Republic fought back to tie it. Tigers Come Back But Fall Short vs. Central

IMG_1600The Republic Tigers dug themselves a big hole, then climbed out of it, but eventually fell to Springfield Central 51-45 Tuesday.

Central jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and Republic didn’t score its first points until Jonathan Combs hit a baseline jumper nearly six minutes into the game. At the end of the first quarter, Central led 17-4. The two teams played a more even second quarter, and the Central lead was 27-15 at the half.

After the break, Republic finally got its offense untracked behind a string of 3-pointers from Kevin Stander. The Tigers outscored Central 16-7 in the 3rd quarter, and cut the lead to 34-31.

Republic eventually tied the game with about 5 1/2 minutes remaining, 38-38. But Central grabbed the lead right back, and never relinquished it again. The Bulldogs hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Kevin Stander led all scorers with 21 points for the Tigers. He scored 17 in the 2nd half. Josh Morrow scored 11 and Jonathan Combs added 9. Central got 20 points from Nathan Wood.

The loss drops Republic to 14-4. Central improves to 9-11.

Tigers Seal Win at the Line

IMG_1205aThe Republic Tigers struggled at the free throw line all night, but Brody Thompson hit six straight free throws down the stretch to seal a 58-48 win over Carthage in their debut at the new arena. Thompson’s clutch shooting from the line helped stave off a Carthage rally that cut Republic’s lead from eight points to one, at 44-43. After that point, Republic outscored Carthage 14-5 down the stretch.

Kevin Stander had another big night for the Tigers, with 20 points, including the first five points of the game. Jonathan Combs added 15 points. Josh Morrow scored 9, Brody Thompson scored six, Ryan Mathis had 5, and Dylan Fletcher had 3 points.

Strafford Tops Republic Behind Wilson’s 23

IMG_0642Republic held most of Strafford’s offense in check all night. But they couldn’t stop Conner Wilson — especially at several key points in the second half — as Strafford beat the Tigers 52-47 in the 2nd round of the Blue and Gold Tournament. Wilson scored 23 points for the Indians, who advance to the Gold Division semifinals.

Republic was behind 2-0 before the clock even started to run. The Tigers were assessed a technical foul because the numbers from their road uniforms were entered into the official scorebook — even though the Tigers were wearing their home white uniforms. Coach Gary Stanfield took the blame, calling it a “coach’s error.”

The Tigers got 25 points from Kevin Stander, who also had seven steals. His hot shooting in the first half helped Republic erase an early deficit and take a brief lead late in the second quarter. Strafford led 25-24 at halftime.

In the second half, Strafford’s defensive pressure caused more problems for Republic, forcing nine Tiger turnovers. Foul trouble for Republic allowed Strafford to get to the free throw line in the 4th quarter and put the game away. Republic cut the lead to one point with about four minutes left, but never got any closer.

In addition to Stander’s 25 points, Jonathan Combs scored 8 points for the Tigers. Dylan Fletcher scored 6, Josh Morrow had 4, and Brodie Thompson had 2.

Republic overcame poor shooting early to take a commanding 29-8 lead at halftime. The Tigers outscored Monett 16-2 in the second period. They led 48-19 at the end of three quarters, before stretching the lead to 33 points at the final buzzer.

Republic had four players who reached double figures in scoring: Kevin Stander, Jonathan Combs, Ryan Mathis and Josh Morrow. Stander left the game with an injured ankle.

The Tigers improve to 5-1. They’ll be back in action the day after Christmas against Cassville in the Blue/Gold Tournament.

The JV team beat Monett 44-34.
