Top-Seeded Lady Tigers Demolish Reeds Spring

District 1Despite a one-loss regular season and a #1 seed in the district tournament, the Republic Lady Tigers started defense of their state championship like a team with something to prove. The Lady Tigers bolted to an early lead and never looked back in a dominating 71-26 win over Reeds Spring in the district semifinals at Rogersville.

Republic scored 20 points in the first 5 1/2 minutes, jumping ahead 20-6. By the end of the 1st quarter, led by a red-hot Alice Heinzler, the Lady Tigers led 24-8. They outscored Reeds Spring 19-4 in the 2nd quarter, and led 43-12 at halftime.

“They’ve been focused ever since the last week,” says coach Kris Flood. “We’ve had some really good practices. It seemed like today, even being out of school. We had a little shoot-around. I really think they’re ready to go.”

Flood says being dropped behind West Plains in the statewide Class 4 poll, and being picked as an upset victim in a recent media coverage, has motivated the Lady Tigers.

“I won’t say it’s not in the back of their minds,” Flood says. “They’ve definitely got a little chip. We talked about it and it’s just one of those situations, I don’t know what else we can do. We’ve played the schedule we’ve played, and not to take anything away from West Plains, but the kids feel like they’re gonna go out and give it their best shot and try to defend their title — at least defend their district title.”

Heinzler had 12 points in the 1st quarter and 17 for the game, despite sitting out most of the 2nd half. No other Lady Tigers were in double figures, but everyone on the team scored. Tori Taylor had eight points, and Sarah Kreul had seven. Alex Botkin, Kayla Bartelsmeyer, Micah Mansker, and Michayla Shanks had six apiece. Lindsey Carlson and Bailey Cornelison had four points each. Jade Sawyer had three, and Rachel Allen and Katherine Hankins scored two.

The lone dark spot for the Lady Tigers was an injury suffered to point guard Alex Botkin, who left the game in the 2nd quarter after she hit the back of her head on the floor while trying to take a charge. Her status for Friday is uncertain.

Republic advances to play the winner of West Plains/Rogersville. West Plains led Rogersville at halftime of the second semifinal 17-4. The Lady Zizzers are ranked #2 in the state, and Republic is currently #3.

Lady Tigers Roll in Regular Season Wrapup

AlexThe Republic Lady Tigers put an exclamation point on their regular season with a 70-22 thrashing of Springfield Glendale Wednesday. Republic never allowed more than seven points in a quarter, as they ran their record to 24-1 heading into the playoffs.

Alice Heinzler scored 18 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Kayla Bartelsmeyer and Micah Mansker scored ten apiece. Sarah Kreul, Tori Taylor and Michayla Shanks each scored eight.

Republic led 14-9 after one quarter, but scored 14 in a row to run the lead to 28-9 in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the 2nd period. They led 43-9 at the half, and 64-15 after three quarters.

“A couple of our kids needed to get their legs back and get some rest after the last month or so, so we needed a game like this,” says coach Kris Flood. “We went out and did what we needed to do, and took care of things in the first half.”

Republic will start district play at Rogersville on February 26th at 6 p.m., after a having a bye in the first round. Republic meets the winner of Reeds Spring (9-13) and Cassville (11-13).

Gone Cold: Win Streak Ends at 83

AliceThe Republic Lady Tigers dug their way out of a 1st-half hole caused by cold shooting, but couldn’t overcome the hot shooting of Haylee Beard and Hannah Cook in a 53-46 loss at home. The loss is the first of the season for Republic (21-1), and ends a program-wide 83-game win streak to start the season.

Republic’s outside shooters couldn’t get untracked in the 1st half, as the Lady Tigers failed to hit a 3-pointer until the 3rd quarter. Leading scorer Alice Heinzler was shut out before halftime, as Ozark jumped to a 24-16 lead at the midway point.

In the 2nd half, Heinzler caught fire as Republic charged back. Trailing 30-20, Republic scored 12 straight points to take a 32-30 lead. Heinzler had nine points in the quarter. Michayla Shanks hit a key three-pointer during that stretch to ignite the crowd, and the teams were tied 32-32 heading into the final period.

But in the 4th quarter, Cook and Beard hit three key 3-pointers in quick succession to help Ozark get a lead it would never relinquish. Heinzler had two treys of her own, but Ozark eventually pulled away and hit its free throws down the stretch. Cook had 11 of her game-high 25 points in the 4th quarter, and Heinzler scored 10 of her 19.

Sarah Kreul, still wearing a mask that limits her vision to protect a broken nose, scored eight points for Republic. Alex Botkin and Lindsey Carlson scored six points apiece.

The loss ends one of the most remarkable streaks in Republic history. No Republic girls basketball team had lost since the final game of the regular season last winter — a string of 89 games in a row. Coach Kris Flood says the loss can turn into a positive for the Lady Tigers.

“It will help us, I think, in the long run,” he says. “The only thing I’m concerned about, we’ve got to turn around and play another good team (Dexter) Saturday. They’re just as physical. And another tough one on Monday (against Branson). Hopefully we can rebound and not let this one start a streak the other way.”

Republic travels to West Plains on Saturday, where they’ll play state-ranked Dexter at Missouri State University-West Plains. The JV game has been canceled, so it will be a varsity-only matchup at 4 p.m.

Shanks, Kreul Snuff Out Nevada Upset Bid

MichaylaJust when Nevada seemed to be gathering momentum down the stretch in a major upset bid, Michayla Shanks nailed back-to-back three-pointers to get Republic over the hump in a 64-54 win. Sarah Kreul’s big 2nd half helped secure the victory for the Lady Tigers, who remain undefeated on the season.

“Michaya Shanks came in off the bench and gave us some relief and put a Band-Aid on there when we needed it, because we were in some trouble there for a little bit,” says coach Kris Flood. “We missed some shots. Not very good on defense. A whole lot of things we didn’t do well tonight.”

Republic trailed in the 3rd quarter, even though they had defeated Nevada by 25 points on Saturday. And even after Republic grabbed the lead midway through the third, Nevada stayed close, trailing by four going into the final period, 42-38.

Nevada cut the lead to three, 43-40, when Shanks went to work. She hit one three-pointer from the right wing and another from the left wing on back-to-back possessions, pushing the Lady Tigers’ lead to 49-40. For the game, Shanks had 13 points, including four treys.

SarahSenior Sarah Kreul also stepped up in the 2nd half, scoring 14 of her game-high 18 points after halftime. She hit 10 of 13 free throws to help seal the victory for the Lady Tigers. Alice Heinzler had nine and Alex Botkin scored seven.

Nevada got 15 points from Morgan McNeley and 14 from Tori Dahmer.

The win improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 17-0. Nevada falls to 11-8.

The overall girls basketball record for the entire program is now 72-0 for the season.

Republic’s Barrage of Threes Buries Joplin

IMG 4235 XLRepublic drained 11 three-pointers, including six by senior Alice Heinzler, on the way to a 70-21 win over Joplin at the Nevada Classic Monday. Heinzler had 17 points by halftime, and finished with a game-high 28. By the time the game was over, eight different Lady Tigers had scored.

Republic allowed just four points in the 1st quarter and two points in the 2nd, in running out to a 34-6 halftime lead. Despite the quick start, head coach Kris Flood says there’s still room for improvement.

(See the photo gallery.)

“I still think we struggled a little bit in that first quarter. We didn’t create a lot of turnovers. We got a lot of easy baskets,” Flood says. “From the 2nd quarter on, we shot the ball extremely well.”

IMG 4244 XLSophomore center Tori Taylor had her best offensive game of the season, scoring ten points. Flood says Taylor still has room to make an impact on the inside on an under-sized team.

“When she puts her mind to it and works hard, she can be a force on the inside,” Flood says. “When she realizes she can use her body, and figures out how to use her body, she’ll be someone who can help us.

Heinzler and Taylor were the only players who scored in double figures for Republic. Michayla Shanks came off the bench to score nine points, all on three-pointers. Alex Botkin also added nine.

Republic improves to 14-0.

Republic Capitalizes on Mistakes to Beat Buffalo

Volleyball Varsity vs Buffalo 21With a record of 26-6, Buffalo was determined to come into Republic and compete with Republic on equal footing. And they did, until unforced errors caused the momentum to swing back Republic, who went on to a 25-16 25-15 victory.

Buffalo seized a lead early, but served the ball into the net four times on key points, allowing Republic to fight their way back from the early deficit and win game one. From there, they cruised to an easy win in game two, powered by Brandy Glessner’s nine straight service points to give them a 10-2 lead.

“They definitely lost some momentum when they missed those serves,” says Republic coach Piper Wright. “I hate that they do it, but my team can play at a low level, then out of nowhere they start chipping away, and that’s what we did the first game.”

For the second time in about a week, Republic beat a team with a better win-loss record. They did it last week against Willard, too.

“I take a lot of pride in the schedule we play. That prepares us for games like this, and it’s going to prepare us for districts, and hopefully later down the road,” says Wright. “We have seven losses, but they are all to very, very good teams.”

Volleyball Varsity vs Buffalo 37In addition to her solid service performance in game two, Brandy Glessner had 12 digs to lead the defense for Republic. Emily Preston and Michayla Shanks had two blocks apiece. Lexi Birlew had seven kills. Sarah Kreul had 12 assists.

Republic improves to 26-7. They’re off until district play next week at Carthage, when they’ll meet either Webb City or Joplin.

The freshmen also cruised to victory for Republic,25-11, 25-11.

Top 10 Stories – #9 – The Freshman Five

FreshmanFive 004Who says you need lots of depth on the bench to succeed in basketball? Not the Republic freshman girls. They overcame an early injury to go undefeated, even though their roster was down to just five players.

After Madison Pullen was hurt two games into the season, coach Amanda Plotner made some adjustments, and her players bought into the system. Those five players–Asia Adair, Keana Adair, Michaela Moore, Bailey Pamperien, and Michayla Shanks–didn’t lose the rest of the way.

“This is a new concept for a lot of them. It’s different than what they did at the junior high level, because they beat people by 50 points,” Plotner said at the time. “But they’re really trying to pay attention to what I’m saying, and listen to the details.

“I’m happy to end the game with five players,” she said. “If I end the game with five, that’s a victory for us.”

They ended all their games with five players, and ended their season without another loss. For that effort you voted them #9 on your list favorite stories of the year at Republic Tiger Sports.
