Lady Tigers Come Back to Beat Nixa

Logan Keck singled home the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, as the Republic Lady Tigers came from behind to beat Nixa, 8-7. It was the sixth straight win for Republic.

Republic led 5-4 after six innings, but Nixa appeared to take control with a three-run rally in the top of the 7th, to give them a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Stephanie Eckhoff hit an infield single to lead off, and Rachael Michaelis reached on an error. After Amanda Snider popped out to second, Brooke Dutton reached on an infield single and Eckhoff scored. That set up Keck’s game-winning hit to right-center field.

Eckhoff pitched a complete game, striking out four, for the win. Payton Apleberry was 3-for-3 for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers improve to 8-1. They’re 2-0 in the COC.

Softball Team Suffers First Loss

The Republic Lady Tigers softball team lost their first game of the season Monday to the Monett Lady Cubs,  8-6 at North Park in Monett.

The Lady Tigers (2-1) sent ten batters to the plate in the third inning and scored five runs.  Highlighting the inning was a run-scoring triple by senior catcher Payton Appleberry and a two-out, two-run single by senior left fielder Logan Keck.

Monett (4-1) responded with six runs in the bottom of the third.  Winning pitcher Raigan Ratliff retired eleven of the final twelve Republic batters over the final four innings to preserve the victory.

Republic is on the road again tomorrow (August 30) at Hillcrest, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Appleberry Homers in Lady Tigers Win

Stephanie Eckhoff allowed just three hits, and pitched around four Republic errors, to lead the Lady Tigers to a 7-1 win over Cassville to open the season. Eckhoff struck out five and walked none.

Payton Appleberry had three hits and scored three runs, including a 2-run homer in the 6th inning. Rachael Michaelis added two hits for Republic.

The Lady Tigers never trailed, after jumping on top 1-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning. They added two more runs in the 3rd. Cassville’s only big threat came in the top of the 4th, when two Republic errors opened the door for a rally. Eckhoff pitched around the trouble, allowing just one run.

Republic put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the 6th, highlighted by Appleberry’s home run to left-center field.

The JV team won 6-2.

The Lady Tigers are back in action Thursday against Reeds Spring.

Payton Appleberry led the way with three base hits. The Lady Tigers scored four runs in the 2nd inning, four more in the 3rd, and five runs in the 4th.

Kickapoo scored all three of its runs in the 3rd, but never mounted another serious rally against Republic pitcher Stephanie Eckhoff. Eckhoff allowed just one earned run on four hits. She struck out two batters.

IMG_4588_2The Republic Lady Tigers put on another offensive show in a 13-3 win over Hillcrest Tuesday. They banged out 20 hits on their way to a six-inning victory, and improved to 4-0.

Kirksville Squeaks by Republic 1-0 in 10 Innings

Kirksville pitcher Jackie Bishop struck out 21 batters to lead Kirksville to a 1-0 win over Republic in 10 innings in the state semifinals. The winning run scored when the umpire ruled that Danielle Llewellen slid across the plate just ahead of a throw from second baseman Lakin Ramsey with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th.

Before that, both offenses had been shut out. Bishop struck out the side in each of the first six innings, and allowed only five baserunners in the game. Republic managed only two hits — both by Payton Appleberry — but never managed to get a runner past first base against Bishop, who still hasn’t given up an earned run all season.

Bishop’s performance overshadowed a great start by Republic’s Hailey Johnson, who held a powerful Kirksville lineup in check for 9 1/3 innings before giving up a run. Kirksville threatened several times, but Johnson pitched out of trouble when she had to. She left Kirksville runners stranded on third base in the second, the fourth, the fifth, and the seventh innings.

Republic will play Platte County in the third place game Saturday afternoon. Kirksville advances to play Cape Girardeau Notre Dame.

Republic Softball Featured in News-Leader

The News-Leader had a long article about the Lady Tigers softball team today, as they prepare for their quarterfinal game against Southern Boone County.

After Haley Johnson tied the state record for home runs (13) and drove in the second most runs (54) in state history last season, opposing softball teams adjusted, prudently pitching around the Republic High School senior as much as possible this fall.

Trouble is, Republic adjusted too, moving Johnson up to the leadoff spot and putting a couple of capable run-producers –senior Amanda Davis and sophomore Payton Appleberry –behind her to make other teams pay for dealing free-passes to Johnson.
