Lady Tigers Drop Thriller at Marshfield in OT

Varsity_vs_Marshfield0002aThe Republic Lady Tigers clawed their way back from a 10-point deficit to force overtime at Marshfield Monday, before falling in overtime 58-57. Republic trailed 33-23 late in the 3rd quarter. They used a frenzied full-court press to get back in the game, and took the lead with :38 left on a layup by Elle Aston, 48-47. But Marshfield hit a free throw with :15 remaining in regulation to tie the game, and Sarah Kreul missed a jumper at the buzzer that would have won it.

In overtime, Marshfield jumped ahead 53-50 before Courtney Gardner tied it with a 3-pointer. After a Marshfield free throw, Gardner hit another 3-pointer to make the lead 56-54. But from that point, Republic missed five of six free throws, including two by Payton Rayl with :06 remaining. The Lady Tigers rebounded the second miss, but a three-point attempt by Gardner rattled in and out, and Sarah Kreul’s hurried follow-up shot failed to fall, giving Marshfield a 58-57 win.

Gardner led Republic in scoring with 19 points. Jayme Sifferman had 10. Sarah Kreul provided a key spark off the bench to get the Lady Tigers back in the game in the 2nd half, and she finished with 8. Elle Aston added seven points to go along with some important defensive plays during the Lady Tigers’ run. Kyra Ramsey had 6 points, Kayce Duvall had 5, and Payton Rayl had 2.

Jessie Bruton had 15 points to lead the Lady Jays. Amanda Gourley had 13.

Nixa Dominates Lady Tigers

Nixa used a big size advantage to dominate inside on both ends of the floor, especially early. Randa Raper, the 5’10″ Nixa forward, had 10 points in the first quarter. Republic’s only points of the first quarter came on a 3-pointer by Kayce Duvall, and Nixa led 16-3 after one period.

The Republic offense got going in the 2nd quarter, but still had no answer for Raper and 6’2″ Regan Peltier inside. At halftime, Nixa led 34-13.

Things didn’t get any better in the 2nd half, as Nixa ran its lead to 49-22 after three periods, before finishing with a 26-point victory.

Peltier had 17 points to lead all scorers for Nixa. Raper had 14, and Emily Walker added 10.

For Republic, Kayce Duvall was the leading scorer with 9 points. Payton Rayl had 8. Alex Botkin added 6. Elle Aston had 4, and Courtney Gardner, Kyla Feith and Jayme Sifferman had 3 apiece.

The Lady Tigers were winners in the JV game, 55-35.

Lady Tigers Sweep Into New Arena

IMG_1057The Republic Lady Tigers opened their new gym with a bad case of nerves Monday night — but they got it turned around in a big way, and cruised to victory over Willard, 55-42. Republic fell behind to Willard 9-0, before whipping of a long run from about the three-minute mark of the first quarter. They outscored Willard 24-5 to take a 24-14 lead into the break.

Jayme Sifferman was the first Lady Tiger to score a varsity point in the new gym. Her bucket and free throw put Republic on the board for the first time, and started the early run that made the difference in the game. After Sifferman made it 9-3, Elle Aston hit one free throw. She missed the second, but Kyla Feith grabbed the rebound, hit a layup, and was fouled. She hit her free-throw, and in just a few seconds, the score was 9-7.

Republic trailed 9-7 after one quarter. But a three-pointer by Kayce Duvall and a layup by Courtney Gardner gave Republic its first lead with about 5:00 left in the half. The Lady Tigers never trailed again. They outscored Willard 31-5 in a run that stretched all the way into the second half.

Duvall led Republic with 19 points. Courtney Gardner scored 8. Elle Aston and Kyla Feith had 7 apiece. Jayme Sifferman scored 5 points, Payton Rayl had 5, and Kyra Ramsey had 3.

Earlier in the night, the freshmen had beaten Nixa 53-16 to christen the new arena. Kayla Bartelsmeyer scored the first-ever bucket in the new facility.

The JV team beat Willard 58-34.
