Morgan’s Big Finish Leads Carthage Past Republic

The Republic Lady Tigers started fast, but Carthage finished faster, coming from behind to beat Republic 55-46.

The Lady Tigers jumped ahead early, thanks to a big first quarter by Sarah Kreul. She had 11 points in the first eight minutes, as Republic built an 18-11 lead. But Carthage adjusted, and clawed back to take the lead 28-27 at halftime.

The second half stayed close most of the way. Republic recaptured the lead 37-36 at the end of the fourth quarter.

But Carthage’s Kaylee Morgan took over down the stretch, and that made the difference. Morgan scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to deliver the victory to Carthage.

Kreul and Kayla Bartelsmeyer both finished with 13 points for Republic.

With the loss, Republic falls to 13-7.

Lady Tigers Drop Home Game to Glendale

IMG 5887Republic all-state violinist Luke Thomas played a stirring rendition of the national anthem before Wednesday’s varsity girls game against Glendale. And not much else went right for Republic all night, as they lost 53-40.

The Lady Tigers fell behind 16-6 after one period, and never seriously challenged the Lady Falcons. Republic fell behind by 13 in the 2nd quarter before using a mini-run to close the gap to 30-22 at halftime. It was 40-30 after three periods.

Brooke Dutton led the Lady Tigers with 14 points. Sarah Kreul had 10, all in the second half. Julia Wells had 21 points to lead Glendale.

The loss drops Republic’s record to 13-6. Glendale improves to 16-3.

Lady Tigers Snap Skid at Home

Alice Heinzler scored 17 points to lead Republic over St. James at home Monday, 62-43. Sarah Kreul added 14 points as the Lady Tigers snapped a two-game losing skid.

Republic’s defense buckled down and held St. James to only 5 field goals in the first half. The Lady Tigers led 26-14 at halftime.

A big 3rd quarter put the game away, as the Lady Tigers outscored St. James 19-9, building the lead to 22 points after three.

Kayla Bartelsmeyer added 8 points and Brooke Dutton scored 7 for the Lady Tigers.

Republic Spreads the Wealth in Win over Webb City

IMG 9243Eight different players scored for the Republic Lady Tigers Monday in a 73-59 win over Webb City at home. Sarah Kreul led the way with 17 points.

Republic jumped to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter, and looked as if they’d run away with it early. But Webb City managed to stay within striking distance, trailing 36-24 at halftime, and 54-40 after three quarters. The Cardinals cut the lead to single digits in the final period before Republic finally used a late run to seal the victory.

In addition to Kreul’s 17, Alice Heinzler added 15 points, Alex Botkin scored 11, and Brooke Dutton had 9.

Republic improves to 9-3. The win evens Republic’s COC record at 1-1.

Lady Tigers Ride Over Mustangs

Alice 001The Republic Lady Tigers bolted out of the gate quickly and left the McDonald County Mustangs in the dust, earning a 64-27 road victory.

Alice Heinzler drained six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points.

Alex Botkin had 12 points and Brooke Dutton scored 11. Baylee Rayl added five, Lindsey Carlson had four, and Kailey Mathis, Alexis Edwards and Sarah Kreul chipped in two apiece.

Heinzler led the way early, hitting four of her 3-point buckets in the first quarter. Republic led 21-6 after the first period, and eventually built the lead to 29-6 around the 5:00 mark of the 2nd quarter. A 6-0 run by McDonald County to close the half made the score 33-15 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers extended the lead to 41-15 early in the 3rd quarter and eventually extended the lead over 30 points, triggering a running clock for most of the 4th quarter.

Missed Chances Doom Lady Tigers

PhotoOzark missed the front end of a 1-and-1 three times in a row during the 4th quarter, but Republic couldn’t capitalize, falling 55-50 in the consolation championship game of the KTXR Lady Classic.

Republic came out strong and grabbed a 16-9 lead, but Ozark answered with 11 straight points to jump on top 20-16. Ozark led 26-20 at halftime.

Republic climbed back in to the game, outscoring Ozark 13-8 in the third period. They eventually whittled the lead down to two, at 42-40, but Ozark burned the Republic press for an easy bucket, and Haylee Beard drained a three-pointer to extend the lead back to seven.

Republic had chances to cut into the lead again down the stretch, but failed to convert on three straight missed free throws by Ozark.

Alice Heinzler led Republic in scoring with 14 points. Brooke Dutton scored 13, including 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Republic was 6-of-13 from three-point range overall.

Ozark outrebounded Republic 29-21, and shot 54% from the field.

Republic falls to 7-2.

Lady Tigers Heat Up to Beat Stockton

Republic overcame a cold shooting start to beat Stockton 58-40 in the KTXR Lady Classic in Springfield Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers were just 1-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc to start the game, while Stockton came out red-hot, hitting 6-of-9 from the field in the first period. After one quarter, Stockton led Republic 13-11.

The Lady Tigers’ defense started to assert itself in the 2nd quarter and Republic picked up some easy buckets in transition. When Alice Heinzler hit a layup to make the score 19-17, it was the Lady Tigers’ first lead of the game. Republic led 30-23 at halftime.

Ashli Burton got hot for Stockton to start the 2nd half, scoring eight of her 14 points in the 3rd quarter. But after Burton cut the lead to 36-33 with about 5:00 left in the period, Taylor Wells hit a big 3-pointer, and the Lady Tigers never looked back. Republic outscored Stockton 22-7  the rest of the way.

Alex Botkin led the Lady Tigers with 14 points. Sarah Kreul added 12.

Republic improves to 7-1. The Lady Tigers advance to the consolation championship against Ozark Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

N. Little Rock Pulls Away at KTXR Lady Classic

Lexus Williams dominated inside to lead North Little Rock to a 60-49 win over Republic in the first round of the KTXR Lady Classic in Springfield. Williams scored 29 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, and blocked five shots.

Republic used hot shooting by Alice Heinzler to stay in the game early. Heinzler hit two three-pointers and had eight points in the first quarter. She finished with a team-high 16 for the Lady Tigers. After one period, North Little Rock led 15-13.

Republic outscored the Lady Charging Wildcats 15-14 in the second quarter, and went into the halftime break railing 29-28.

The Lady Tigers took the lead for a while in the 3rd quarter, but North Little Rock’s physical style of play eventually wore down Republic, and the Lady Charging Wildcats began to pull away. At the end of three periods, North Little Rock led 44-36.

In the 4th quarter, North Little Rock built a double-digit lead early. Republic cut the lead to seven points with about three minutes left, but could get no closer.

Besides Heinzler, no other Lady Tigers were in double figures in scoring. Brooke Dutton and Sarah Kreul had 8 points apiece.

Republic falls to 6-1. They will play Wednesday at 5:30 against the loser of the Glendale/Stockton game.

 

Lady Tigers Topple Kickapoo in OT

Brooke Dutton hit a game-tying layup at the end of regulation to force overtime, and Republic outscored Kickapoo 16-9 in the extra period, to stay undefeated with an 81-74 victory.

Alice Heinzler had 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Sarah Kreul had 20, including 10 in the fourth quarter to spark a Lady Tigers’ comeback. Alex Botkin added 12 points and Dutton had 10.

Kreul’s biggest two points came with 11.9 seconds left in regulation and Republic trailing 63-61. She was fouled hard inside, and stepped to the line to drain to free throws and tie the game.

That set up more heroics for the Lady Tigers. At the other end of the floor, Kickapoo’s Annie Armstrong was fouled and hit her free throws to put Kickapoo ahead again, 65-63, with 5.1 seconds remaining. Armstrong had a huge game, finishing with 36 points to lead all scorers.

Botkin took the in-bound pass, dribbled the length of the floor, and dished to Dutton for her game-tying layup at the buzzer.

Kickapoo scored four quick points to start the overtime, but Republic’s defense shut down the Lady Chief, allowing only five points the rest of the way. Heinzler hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one, then went 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch help seal the victory.

Republic improves to 6-0. The JV and freshman teams both also won.

Defense Keys Lady Tigers Road Win

The Republic Lady Tigers used a stifling defense to steamroll Carl Junction in a blowout win on the road, 59-16.

Republic led 38-11 at halftime, and the defense got even better after the break. The Lady Tigers shut out Carl Junction in the 3rd quarter, and allowed just five points in the fourth quarter.

Sarah Kreul led the Lady Tigers with 16 points. Alex Botkin added 13. Brooke Dutton and Alice Heinzler scored 10 apiece.

The JV team also won, 37-27.
