Kicking Off a New Era

The Republic Lady Tigers soccer team took the field for the first time Thursday, in a scrimmage between the varsity and JV squads.

This is the first year for soccer at Republic. The boys team played its first season last fall. Hines says he likes what he sees from the girls so far.

“In the girls game, if you have some good athletes, that can compensate,” Hines said. “I think that right now, we’re in a very nice position to get to the start of the season. I think the girls are glad that it’s here. We’ll all be very happy a week from now, when we have two games under our belt.”

High school competition will be new to all the Lady Tigers, but a handful of players have played competitive soccer in the past. Hines said that will help, but inexperience is still a big issue for most of the team.

“You have a group of athletes that don’t really know what we’re getting into. We walked through the pre-game because it’s the first time we’ve done it. We walked everyone through the meeting with the officials–the coin flip. Each time we do that, we’ll have a little more familiarity and they’ll get more comfortable with it.”
