Tigers Win First-Ever Home Match

The Republic Tigers soccer team finally got to play a home match Thursday night — and they made it pay off. After spending last year on the road while waiting for their home field to be finished, the Tigers beat New Covenant Academy 2-0.

Republic won the possession game almost from the start, keeping pressure on the New Covenant defense throughout the first half. The Tigers took 22 shots on goal for the game.

Republic’s first score came around the 14:30 mark in the first half, when Elijah Bean took a pass from Hugo Donjuan and headed it past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers scored again at about the 30:00 mark of the second half, when the New Covenant goalkeeper came out to pursue the ball and got beaten, leaving Jacob Goetz with an open goal on the second assist of the night by Donjuan.

About 150 people turned out for the Tigers’ home opener on a 100-degree day.

Republic improves to 1-1. The Tigers will play Nixa next Tuesday.
