Fisher Named Head Basketball Coach

FisherTrevyor Fisher is the new boys basketball coach at Republic. The school board approved his hiring Monday night.

Fisher has been director of basketball operations at Missouri State University for seven years. He played for the Bears under Barry Hinson, and graduated in 2005. Before that, he played basketball for Greenwood.

Fisher says he was attracted to the Republic job for several reasons. “You look at the tradition, obviously the rich tradition, the facilities, the people in place in the entire school district, it’s the total package that drew me to it.”

Athletic Director Greg Garton says Fisher’s preparation was obvious during the interview process. “What stood out was the type of exciting ideas he has for our program,” says Garton. “He has an unlimited amount of knowledge about the game of basketball–not just about the game, but about how to run a program.

“I’ll be happy when our kids and our community get to know him. I think they’re going to love what Trevyor Fisher is all about,” says Garton.

Fisher says on the court, defense will be the staple of his teams. “It’s going to be done every day in practice. Working on different drills, jumping to the ball, cutting off the baseline. That will be our foundation for the program.

“Offensively, it will depend on personnel a little bit, but obviously I want to play an exciting brand of basketball and get the best shots possible from the right people,” Fisher says.

But Fisher says the most important work for his teams will happen off the court.

“First and foremost, the kids are there to get an education,” he says. “Also, just trying to teach these young men how to be able, once they leave their high school days, to be a young man in society, to teach them values and ethics, and to work hard every single day, whether it’s on the court or off the court.”

Garton says even though Fisher has never been a head coach, his duties at MSU have prepared him for this job.

“Trevyor has so much experience. There are different ways that people get prepared for a certain opportunity. The opportunities he’s had, there’s no doubt in my mind, have prepared him for this position,” Garton says.

“The things I’ve done at Missouri State–working on the academic side of things, working with camps, with scheduling, with game film breakdown, scheduling and facilities–anything and everything that goes on behind the scenes, that’s very important,” says Fisher. “It’s not just about coaching individual games. It’s about building an entire program.”
