Turnovers and porous defense cost the Lady Tigers in a late Friday game against Jefferson City at the Kickapoo Stephanie Phillips Classic. The Lady Jays turned the game into a rout in the fourth quarter, romping to a 69-47 victory.
For the first eight minutes, neither team played much defense. The score was 21-16 Jefferson City after the first period, and the Lady Jays’ lead ballooned to ten points early in the second quarter, at 31-21.
Hot shooting kept Republic close, until they cooled off in the second quarter. Brylee Manes scored eight points in the first period, but both she and Megan Branstetter ended up on the bench soon thereafter with early foul trouble.
After a hot start, Jefferson City didn’t slow down much as the game wore on. The Lady Jays scored 16 points in the third quarter, and led 49-36 after three. They scored another 13 points in the first four minutes of the final period, pushing the lead to 25 points before coasting to the win.
The loss was the first one all season that did not come down to the final possession for the Lady Tigers. It dropped their record to 1-4. Republic returns the court Saturday at 3 pm against Harrison, Ark.
